Umbwe is one of the shortest and steepest route on Kilimanjaro, especially if summiting from the western breach (Arrow Glacier Camp).Trekkers on this route must be pre-acclimatized as you gain altitude very quickly. This does not make Umbwe route a technical route, but it is more physically demanding than the other routes. The route has magnificent scenery on the first two days, with beautiful tropical rainforest as well as massive valleys and gorges.
All though physically challenging, this route rewards its climbers with a more luxurious trekking experience with fewer people, pristine forest, wild life and bird watching on the lower stages and shorter walking distances after the first day. Recommended route for fit climbers.
After breakfast you will be driven to the Machame gate where registration formalities will be completed. From the Machame gate you will be transferred to the Umbwe Gate (1641m), passing through villages with coffee and banana plantations. The air is thick with moisture and the path is usually muddy. The route initially follows a forestry track winding up through the natural rain forest.
It then narrows and steepens to climb the ridge between the Lonzo and Umbwe rivers, with huge trees surrounding you. The path offers some spectacular views of deep gorges and if you are lucky, glimpses of Kilimanjaro towering above you in the distance. The camp is perched between huge trees and thick undergrowth. Enjoy dinner and overnight at the Umbwe Cave Camp (2 850m).
