Machame, the best route on Kilimanjaro when it comes to viewing and acclimatization, approaches the mountain from the south west side. This is the most challenging summit bound route, going half way around the mountain, with great views of the southern face of Kilimanjaro.
This route is great for both new and experienced climbers, with options available for longer and more leisurely paced climbs. Climbers are accommodated in tents and the campsites are all placed lower than the highest point of the day (walk high, sleeping low), which is good for acclimatisation. Summit can be reached either from the western breach (Arrow Glacier Camp), Crater Camp or Via Barafu Camp.
This is the most scenic route, with beautiful rain forest, rock formations, glaciers and snowfields combined with excellent climbing terrain.
The drive from Moshi to the Mount Kilimanjaro National Park Gate takes about 50 minutes. The journey passes through the village of Machame which is located on the lower slopes of the mountain. We now leave the park gate and walk through the rain forest on a winding trail up a ridge. Lower down, the trail can be muddy and slippery. Gaiters and trekking poles are a good idea here. We continue a short distance until we reach the Machame Camp.
