Mount Meru is the second highest mountain in Tanzania, the 5th in Africa standing tall at 4566m/14,979ft.Located on western of Kilimanjaro in Arusha National Park and is over shadowed by Kilimanjaro; it’s providing spectacular view of mt Kilimanjaro and surrounding country side. Trekking on Mt Meru offers beautiful scenery and plenty of wildlife, is a challenging trek due to its steepness. A 3 or 4 days climb on Meru involves hiking through lower montane forest and higher montane forest with grassland on mountain lower slopes, followed by a dramatic ridge walk to the summit. On Meru an escort of armed park ranger is provided to accompany your climb because of the abundance of wild animals.
Mount Meru Trekking is a great preparation hike for climbing Kilimanjaro, or a spectacular trek for those not compelled to do Kilimanjaro. You will hike past wildlife, the landscape is spectacular, and sunrise on the summit has Kilimanjaro as the backdrop. While typically done in only in 3 or 4 days, it is not an easy peak to summit. To reach the top, there is some scrambling on rocks in the dark and at high altitude. You should be prepared for at least 8-9 hours of up and down hiking on summit day. For an easier hike, you can climb just to Rhino Point for sunrise, and then descend.
Mt. Meru is in Arusha National Park. In Arusha National Park all hikers must be accompanied by an armed ranger in addition to our guide from N.E Ltd, who is managing the crew and watching out for your safety. The park ranger has the authority to make decisions such as trail choices, pace, etc. This ranger is employed directly by the national park. Arusha National Park will combine groups of people to hike with one park ranger; therefore, we cannot guarantee a private Meru trek, though can be requested.
In general, a part of trekking in its own right, note that Mt. Meru is a great way to acclimatize before attempting Kilimanjaro which can be done in 3-4 days. The below itinerary can be done also in 3 days depends with your travel schedule.
